At the 2014 OMEP World Assembly in Cork, Ireland, representatives from more than 45 national committees agreed to join the world comment by celebrating of the following special days each year on or around the designated dates:
September 21: International Day of Peace (also called World Peace Day): http://www.un.org/en/events/peaceday/ and http://pathwaystopeace.org/international-day-of-peace/
November 20: Universal Children’s Day http://www.timeanddate.com/holidays/un/universal-childrens-day/
May 28: World Play Day: http://www.itla-toylibraries.org/pages/world_play_day/
World Assembly members also supported the concept of celebrating other special days, such as
June 16: International Day of the African Child: http://www.who.int/pmnch/media/events/2014/african_child/en/
These representatives also agreed to encourage their members to document activities and events marking the special days by posting photos and related stories on their national OMEP websites and by submitting photos and stories for possible inclusion on the World OMEP website.
In further discussion, World Assembly members discussed the importance of integrating activities relating to these special days into the curriculum whenever possible, rather than simply having children and families experience them as once-a-year celebrations.
